Nesebar and the coast
Three thousand years of history, four kilometres away.
Sunny Beach is young. Its neighbour is not. Within a short drive there is a UNESCO World Heritage town, ancient Greek harbours, working salt pans and the point where the Balkan mountains finally reach the sea.
Nesebar: a whole town on one rock
The old town sits on a small rocky peninsula, joined to the mainland by a narrow causeway. Thracians settled it some three thousand years ago as Menebria; Greek colonists refounded it as Mesambria in the sixth century BC, and it was Roman, Byzantine and Bulgarian in turn. What survives is unusual: the remains of dozens of medieval churches standing between wooden houses from the National Revival period, on lanes barely wide enough for a cart. UNESCO added the whole town to the World Heritage list in 1983.
Sunny Beach: a resort built on dunes
The place you are staying in did not exist within living memory. Until the late 1950s this was an empty stretch of sand dunes between Nesebar and the hills. Work on a purpose-built seaside resort began in 1958, and it grew into the largest on the Bulgarian coast: kilometres of shallow, sandy beach backed by hotels, gardens and promenades. That is why the two neighbours feel so different — one was planned for holidays, the other grew over three millennia.
Nesebar Old Town

The UNESCO town next door: medieval churches, wooden houses, harbour restaurants and the old windmill on the causeway. An afternoon on foot is enough for a first visit.
Pomorie

A quieter old salt town on a narrow peninsula. Salt pans still worked by hand, a salt museum, the healing lye mud of the lagoon, and a monastery above the bay.
Burgas

The nearest real city: the long Sea Garden park above the shore, a lively pedestrian centre, and the lakes around it, which are one of Europe’s great birdwatching stops.
Sozopol
≈ 70 km
Founded as Apollonia Pontica around 610 BC and still the prettiest old town on this coast: cobbled lanes, wooden houses over stone cellars, and small beaches on either side.
Ravadinovo Castle

A modern fantasy castle near Sozopol, built by one man over decades, with gardens, peacocks and a lake. Not ancient at all, and children love it.
Cape Emine
≈ 25 km
Where the Balkan mountain range finally runs into the Black Sea. A lighthouse, wide empty views, and the start of the long coastal trail heading south.
